SCL TRAINING BLOG – The Fear Induced Performance Paradox

Hey! Its been a while!

I want to talk about something I believe effects every athlete at some point or another when trying to be competitive or even just training in general…

The Fear of Failing!

At some point we stop testing ourselves/trying and actually start avoiding the testing all together.

This isn’t to say we don’t train hard – but the idea of testing and being compared to our previous best or other people is enough to not test at all.

Personally, i’ve definitely avoided workouts because I knew I couldn’t get near one of my previous scores. Which is ridiculous if you think about it – being scared of being beaten by a former version of yourself.

But the idea is to remember why we’re even testing in the first place.

Its to track progress and make adjustments to training to improve performance.

It doesn’t have to be seen as a you vs old you, or a you vs someone else. Testing is purely a training tool to see what is working and what isn’t.

I think this becomes one of the most common reasons athletes stop progressing

‘I didn’t really try in that workout’

‘They’ve been training loads more than me’

‘This workout isn’t in my wheel house’

All deflections of the fact that potentially you didn’t put the work in & someone else did.

I write this because The CrossFit Open is upon us & the entire Crossfit community is looking to compare themselves to the rest of the world.

But used correctly, The CF Open should fuel & help manipulate training for the following months!

Getting confirmation you’re not where you used to be isn’t a bad thing.

I find it gives me motivation to beat previous iterations of Sam (he’s a prick anyway!)

Good Luck for those in The CrossFit Open!

Thanks,

Sam ✌🏼
